A prime example of the hand craftsmanship in metalwork that characterizes the work of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte. The goal of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop) was to form a “productive cooperative of artisans” aimed at reviving quality craftsmanship and public interest in design. The community included artists, designers and architects who worked in many mediums including silver, ceramics, fashion, graphic arts, and furniture. The movement was a pioneering force in modern design, influencing the styles of Bauhaus and Art Deco. This vase stands on a flared base that supports a ribbed body of undulating form with hand-hammered texture throughout. The edge of the base bears a series of metal punches of the Wiener Werkstätte: “WIENER/WERK/STATTE”, the Josef Hoffmann monogram “JH”, the WW logo and the rose mark, the registered company trademark for silver and gold.
